Department Introduction

Leading the Way in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine
Established in 1980, the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at CMUH has evolved into the largest thoracic training center in central Taiwan. We provide comprehensive care across general wards, respiratory care centers, and intensive care units. Moving beyond traditional care, we integrate cutting-edge technology with clinical expertise to set a new benchmark in Asia.

Our Core Competencies & Innovations:

1. Complex Airway Intervention & Reconstruction
We possess one of Asia's leading interventional bronchoscopy teams, specializing in the management of complex airway tumors and stenosis. Integrating balloon dilation, stent placement, electrocautery, tumor ablation, and cryotherapy, we instantly resolve airway obstructions. Our team provides one-stop, life-saving, and precision treatment for patients with both benign and malignant airway disorders.

2. Precision Lung Cancer Diagnosis
Combining EBUS-TBNA (Endobronchial Ultrasound-guided Transbronchial Needle Aspiration) with Virtual Bronchoscopic Navigation (VBN), we achieve precise localization and sampling for mediastinal lymph node staging and peripheral pulmonary nodules. With high diagnostic yields and Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE), we realize a "one-stop shop" for early lung cancer diagnosis.

3. HiThings Tele-ICU (Smart Critical Care Command Center)
We pioneered the "HiThings Tele-ICU," leveraging AI and AIoT to construct a Digital Twin for 24/7 patient monitoring. Our AI-driven innovations include ARDiTeX, proven to reduce mortality in ARDS patients, and NutriPilot, an integrated system for real-time, precise nutrition intervention. Through technology empowerment, we deliver comprehensive, precision critical care.

Service

Disease

  1. The Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine provides comprehensive care ranging from outpatient chronic disease management to intensive critical care. Our primary clinical scope includes:
    • Lung Cancer & Thoracic Oncology: Lung cancer screening, pulmonary nodule follow-up, mediastinal tumors, and precision treatment for advanced lung cancer (including Immunotherapy, Targeted Therapy, and Chemotherapy).
    • Airway & Allergic Diseases: Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD/Emphysema), Bronchiectasis, and Chronic Cough.
    • Critical Care & Respiratory Infections: Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), Respiratory Failure, Sepsis, Complicated Pneumonia, and Tuberculosis.
    • Hyperbaric Oxygen & Sleep Medicine: Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning, Gas Gangrene, non-healing wounds (e.g., Diabetic Foot), Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and Snoring.
    • Other Pulmonary Diseases: Pneumothorax, Pleural Effusion, and Interstitial Lung Disease (Pulmonary Fibrosis).

Symptoms

  1. If you experience the following respiratory warning signs, we recommend seeking a professional evaluation from a pulmonologist immediately:
    • Chronic Cough: Coughing for more than 3 weeks, severe dry cough, or increased sputum production.
    • Shortness of Breath (Dyspnea): Shortness of breath during exertion, feeling of "air hunger," or waking up at night due to chest tightness.
    • Hemoptysis: Blood-tinged sputum or coughing up fresh blood, which may be a warning sign of tumors or bronchial lesions.
    • Chest Pain or chest tightness: Chest pain or a sensation of pressure/oppression when taking a deep breath.
    • Wheezing: A whistling sound while breathing, which may indicate airway obstruction or an asthma attack.
    • Signs of Hypoxia: Bluish discoloration of the lips or fingernails (Cyanosis), unexplained fatigue, or drowsiness.
    • Severe Snoring & Daytime Sleepiness: Loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep (apnea), or excessive daytime fatigue/dozing off while driving (signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea).
    • Systemic Symptoms: Unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or recurrent fever.
