Department Introduction

The diagnosis rate of occupational diseases in Taiwan is significantly low. With the trend of trade liberalization, Taiwan has attended in the World Trade Organization. The domestic enterprises will be challenged with globalization, standardization and sustainable management.

The Environmental Occupational Medicine aims to integrate industrial safety, environmental protection and enterprise sustainable developments. The revelation and promotion of environmental occupational medicine is a progressive indicator of a nation in the 21st century.

In 2011, the Department of Health, Executive Yuan announced the Regulations Governing Occupational Medical Specialist Examination, and the occupational medicine became the 25th specialty. Today, there are more than 300 specialists. The CMUH is one of thirteen specialist training hospitals in Taiwan. Occupational medicine is the integration specialty between clinical medicine and preventive medicine. It aims to diagnose, identify and treat occupational-related diseases, to prevent occupational injuries and diseases and to assist the disability diagnosis of Labor Insurance and labor impairment assessment.


The diagnosis and treatment of environmental and occupational diseases are related to various specialty disciplines. For example, those of occupational respiratory diseases (pneumoconiosis) shall cooperate with Department of Chest, those of plumbism shall cooperate with Department of Hematology and Neurology, and those of back pain may require the involvement of Department of Orthopedics, Neurology and Rehabilitation. Therefore, in addition to occupational disease physicians, the collaborations of the specialists in chest, hepatobiliary, nerve, skin, bone, oncology, rehabilitation, otolaryngology, blood, metabolism, laboratory, pathology, toxicology, and other disciplines are required to perform the correct diagnosis and treatment of environmental and occupational diseases.
 

Moreover, the overall assessment and control of environment must be supported by the public health colleagues. After effectively presenting the seriousness of the problem, it can solve the problem and feedback to the prevention in the workplace.

In addition, occupational medicine also assists the implementation of general and specific labor operation health examinations, graded management of special operation health examinations, follow-up reviews, notification of suspected occupational diseases, rehabilitation, resumption of work, work assignments and workplace health promotion for personnel inside and outside the hospital. To achieve these purposes, the Department keep the close relationship with each clinical department, Department of Nursing, Department of Human Resources, Personnel Health Promotion Team and Labor Safety and Health Room.

The ultimate goal of occupational medicine is to create appropriate work environment for people. It aims to ensure people can keep healthy at work, take economic guarantee, sense of accomplishment and meanings of satisfaction in their life.

  • Establish the sunflower community rehabilitation center to provide the most appropriate services to patients and their families with limited medical resources;
  • Increase the services of community counseling center, such as growth groups, potential development workshops, etc.;
  • Expand out-patient clinic for children and set the specific out-patient clinics for ADHD and autism
  • Set the special out-patient clinic for individual psychotherapy to extend medical services.
  • Set the elder day care service and sunflower community rehabilitation center to efficiently extend the treatment and rehabilitation effects in hospitalization for psychoses to their daily life.
