Department Introduction

China Medical University Hospital has been transforming and improving over its 30-plus years of history. The surgery department, likewise, has gone a long way on medical service, education of interns and resident physicians, and basic/clinical research, hoping to measure up to international standards.

Through the endeavor of former chief surgeons – Dr. Xie Guo-lian, Dr. Wang De-yuan, Dr. Yang Qing-qiang, Dr. Lee Quan-sen, Dr. Hong Qi-bin, Dr. Wu Ming-zhen, Dr. Li Ming-chung, Dr. Yang Mei-du, Dr. Zheng Long-bin, and Dr. Wang Hui-chang – the division has grown rapidly from its inception and is now able to usher in new technology and ideas and make contribution to the hospital's construction of a complete subspecialty system.

Education
Being the most skill-oriented division, surgery is also one that is prone to most legal problems. Therefore, the education of our young doctors is divided into four areas: 1. integrity, including medical ethics and legal knowledge. 2. professional knowledge. 3. skills training. 4. communication skills with patient's family, such as how to explain the seriousness of illness.

Our attending physicians are all instructors in China Medical University, who know well professionalism is not enough to deal with doctor-patient relationship nowadays. Therefore, they spare no effort on telling young doctors and students the importance of empathy when practicing medicine and facing patients' families.
Research
The hospital's basic research teams are all led by senior professors. The many branches of the surgical division have been cooperating with the university by using its resources, and they have published numerous articles in domestic and international medical journals. The building of an animal testing center is instrumental in honing surgical skills of our residential doctors and helping them invent new skills.

The department encourages our attending physicians to further their education in the university's graduate schools for master's and PhD degrees.

We regularly send our attending staff to M.D. Anderson cancer center, our sister hospital in Texas, U.S., to study and bring back new skills and ideas.
Outlook
A successful medical center must excel in three areas: clinical, education/training, and research. This is not easy for doctors who spend most their time on clinical work, but we're all determined to do our best to achieve these goals.
