Integration of Traditional Chinese-Western Medicine

Department Introduction

In order to achieve the purpose of founding the hospital and integrate the essence of Chinese and Western medicine, the hospital set up the Chinese and Western Cooperative Medical Center on April 16, 1987 under the planning of superintendent Ting-fu Wang. On the one hand, it established integrated Chinese and Western medicine clinics, where senior specialists of Chinese and Western medicine jointly examined the patient; on the other hand, it actively recruited talent, employing doctors specializing in Chinese and Western medicine.

Physicians specializing in Chinese and Western medicine are those who majored in these two subjects over the course of medical education; after graduation, they passed national examinations and acquired Chinese and Western medicine qualifications, which means they are allowed to choose to practice Chinese or Western medicine at various medical institutions in Taiwan. The physicians who enter the unit must receive complete training for Western medicine specialists, obtain the license of a specialist, and complete the training for resident doctors of Chinese medicine before they can be promoted to attending physician. As a result, each of ours doctors possesses the professional knowledge of Chinese and Western medicine, which can provide patients with all-round and excellent holistic medical services.

In March 2008, in response to the overall development of the hospital and the adjustment of cultivation education of Chinese medicine residents, the unit merged with the Chinese medicine department into one renamed the Division of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, continuing to supply quality integrated Chinese and Western medicine services.

The Division of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine is a national first and a major feature of the hospital. It emphasizes the combination of the essence of traditional and modern medicine, and gives appropriate medical therapy to improve the patient's condition depending on their clinical needs. The combination of Chinese and Western medicine is not only the combination of Chinese and Western medicines, but also the integration of the essence of traditional medicine and modern medical knowledge, providing patient-centered holistic medical services.

The development of the combination of Chinese and Western medicine is a team work. At present, the unit has Chinese and Western medicine combined with dermatology, metabolism, pediatrics, otolaryngology, and neurology, and aims to expand into oncology, nephrology, and immunology and rheumatology.

The division is responsible for the courses on integrated Chinese and Western medicine for the hospital's interns and school students. In the future, we hope that more excellent new force will join the lineup of integrated Chinese and Western medicine, boosting the strength of research, teaching, and service, enhancing international academic exchanges, and improving medical standards, so that integrated Chinese and Western medicine can become a new therapy model of mainstream medicine.
