Lower Gastrointestinal Barium Enema Study 下消化道鋇劑攝影術

Purpose

To examine the large intestine’s shape, function, and presence or absence of obstruction, ulcer, polyp, tumor or diverticulum by barium enema under X-ray.

Notes before examination

  • Complete the examination consent form and fully understand the complications of the examination.
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight before the examination.
  • Eat a low-residue or liquid diet 2 to 3 days before the examination, and eat clear liquid diet within 24 hours before the examination.
  • Take a laxative orally or enema at about 9 o'clock the night before the examination and drink more boiled water.

Checking process

  • Pour barium and air into the anus to stretch the large intestine apart and check the changes of the large intestine under X-ray.
  • This exam may produce mild pain, cramps, and urge to empty your bowels.

Notes after examination

  • Eating/drinking is allowed immediately after the examination.
  • It is normal that white feces may be excreted within 2 to 3 days after the examination.
  • Drink plenty of boiled water after the examination to excrete barium to prevent caking and obstruction of the intestine
  • Inform medical staff if feces do not come out. Take laxatives or enemas if necessary.
