Shortwave Diathermy 短波治療簡介

11/18/2024

What is shortwave?

Shortwave is a deep thermotherapy. It is one of the tools of diathermy because it can generate alternating magnetic fields through electric currents at high frequency and produce heat energy when penetrating human tissues.

As the heat penetration of the shortwave hyperthermia instrument can reach more than 3cm under the skin. Therefore, it is very suitable for patients with arthropathy. Clinically, shortwave comes with a variety of output devices, such as drum, sheet, line, disc shapes, etc., so it is suitable for the pain relief in all parts of the body.

What disease is shortwave targeted at?

Shortwave is classified as deep thermotherapy, which can not only improve the blood circulation, but also promote the healing of tissues. Therefore, it is often used to deal with the contracture of joints, the contraction of joint capsules, and the removal of muscle fibrosis and scar formation.

Common clinical conditions such as shoulder muscle strain, lower spine pain, knee ligament, meniscus injury, frozen shoulder, post-operative joint adhesion and degenerative joints.

Is it normal to feel hot when doing shortwave?

In fact, the surface skin can only feel the slight temperature during the treatment. Once the skin is hot like soaking in a hot spring, the temperature of the body tissue will overheat, which will easily cause damage thereto. Therefore, the dose control is very important, otherwise, it will be self-defeating.

When treating, let the treated part feel warm. After treatment, it is normal for the treatment site to be slightly red and warm.

Precautions

Shortwave treatment usually lasts about 20 minutes. Beds and chairs should be made of wood. There should be no heat-transfer metal on the patient, such as copper nails and other internal metal fixators. During operation, the metal ornaments on the body should also be removed. Otherwise, it is easy to burn due to electric field concentration. After the affected area is confirmed to be dry, stick the applicator on it and separate it from the applicator by towel.

Under what circumstances can't shortwave diathermy be done?

  • No metal implants or heart rate regulators are allowed in the body.
  • Keep away from moisture rich areas such as the eyeball and scrotum.
  • Areas with malignant tumors.
  • Growth plates of children and teenagers.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Areas of bleeding.
  • Areas with abnormal skin sensation.
