Most of the patients receiving rehabilitation programs are at high risk for falls due to their mobility difficulties. When you and your family come to the treatment area, please pay attention to the following matters to ensure patient safety:
Persons with limited physical mobility need to be accompanied by a caregiver for rehabilitation treatment
- When getting on or off the wheelchair by equipment or bed surface:
- The wheelchair is at a 45-degree angle with the device or bed edge, with the patient's healthy side moving towards the seat or bed, the brakes secured, and the feet on the floor.
- The patient's Stronger hand holds the opposite armrest of the wheelchair.
- The accompanying person holds the patient's belt firmly, supports or approaches the patient's body, and assists the patient to move with his/her weight leant on the healthy-side foot.
- The patient should place his/her weight on the healthy-side foot, hold on to the armrest on the opposite side, stand up and then turn around to sit down. The accompanying person assists the patient to move by stabilizing his/her body.
- When patients with stroke, hemiplegia or poor balance are walking on crutches:
- Stand by the patient's affected side and help to pull his/her belt and keep his/her body steady.
- If the patient’s foot on the affected side is unable to lift, encourage him/her to lean his/her weight first and help lift, move his/her affected foot for a stride.
- Do not pull or hold the patient's affected shoulder to avoid shoulder joint injury.
- When the patient is turning around and siting down, he/she should put his/her healthy-side foot close to the seat, turn around slightly using the healthy-side foot, or hold the seat firmly with the healthy-side hand, and turn around and sit down with his/her weight leant on the healthy-side foot.
- When getting on and off the treadmill:
- Please hold the handrail firmly and do not step on the wheel at the edge of the belt.
- The therapist would put a safety key on the patient and starts the treadmill. Please do not operate or remove the safety key by yourself. The therapist will ask you to get off the treadmill after confirming that the treadmill has stopped and the safety magnetic buckle has been removed.
When the accompanying person needs to leave the patient alone temporarily
- During the rehabilitation treatment, if the companion needs to leave temporarily, please inform the treatment staff first.
- Before leaving, please allow the patients with poor standing balance to sit down first and the patients with poor sitting balance to lie down first, and secure them with a safety belt as required.
Pay attention to your steps, keep space, avoid running and pushing inside and outside the treatment zone
- Patients prone to falls are common in and outside the treatment area. Please watch your steps, keep proper walking space to keep each other safe. Do not run, stop or turn quickly to avoid falling down.
- When young children come to the hospital, hold them firmly by the hand. Do not let them run or play in the corridor, so as to avoid collision and accidental injury.
Other precautions
- Do not climb the stairs if you have mobility difficulties, are weak or have poor vision.
- If the floor of the spa area is wet and slippery, please inform the staff by the call bell to dry it as soon as possible. The spa bucket for the lower extremity is equipped with handrails. Please hold the handrail firmly and step on the steps slowly.
- If you need to use a wheelchair temporarily, you can borrow it from the information desk on the first floor of each medical building or inform the personnel for assistance.
