Brachytherapy 近接放射線治療簡介

5/21/2024

Radiation therapy generally consists of external beam radiation therapy and internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy).

  • External beam radiation therapy targets the tumor from a certain distance following a well-designed treatment plan.
  • Internal radiation therapy, also known as brachytherapy or 'internal radiation,' involves placing a radioactive source close to or inside the tumor tissue. This method enhances the dosage received by the tumor while minimizing the dose and side effects on healthy tissues. It can be combined with external beam radiation therapy.

Brachytherapy is not suitable for tumors that are too large or complex in shape. The method of brachytherapy used here is high-dose-rate remote afterloading brachytherapy, using an Ir-192 source, commonly applied for localized intensification in cervical and endometrial cancer.

Process

  • Physicians will place a hollow tubular instrument inside the body part, use CT simulation for positioning, and gather data to plan the treatment dose distribution, the dose received by normal tissue and vital organs, and the location and duration of the source's placement.
  • This facility provides intravaginal and intrauterine brachytherapy, with the treatment plan based on whether the patient has undergone surgical resection.
  • During the procedure, the insertion of instruments may cause discomfort, and the physician may administer sedatives or painkillers.
  • After the treatment, the physician will examine the patient, and the nurse will provide post-treatment care instructions before the patient can go home.
