Social workers in various divisions handle the social, psychological, and family issues arising from the disease through group work according to the needs of special patients in the division. As long-term chronic diseases require long-term adaptation or change of lifestyle, social workers can use group dynamics to solve the problem according to the needs of the patients or their family members.
The direction for the development of group work is drawn up by social workers as per the needs of the group members. To explore and understand the social and psychological factors in the patients with the disease, relevant information are extensively gathered to get to know the possible needs of group members. Relevant medical staff is brought in to set up a team for work.
Through the social work group method and with the planning and guidance by social workers, it assists patients and family members to form a group for sharing their experiences and providing emotional support, with the aim of helping them to develop their potential and improving and solving the problems they have encountered.
The mission of China Medical University Hospital’s (CMUH) Social Work Office is to provide social work professional services to patients, family members, and community residents with love, patience, and expertise, for the purpose of improving the quality of medical services and promoting the well-being of the cases and their families, as well as fulfilling social medical responsibilities, offering an accessible medical environment, and safeguarding the right of patients to seek medical attention. It meets its social responsibility via case work, group work, and community work. As of 1991, the Social Work Office has been actively planning community health care work, boosting the medical service level, and caring for society and giving back to the community.
Every year, the Social Work Office joins hands with social welfare organizations in holding year-end care activities aimed at disadvantaged groups such as underprivileged schoolchildren and the elderly living alone, in the hope of arousing the public's concern for them.
In order to acquire more complete medical services and warm care for the patients and their families, a volunteer team was set up in 1985 to provide the opportunity for members of society to participate in social services. With the service process, the volunteers possess broader version and a good outlook on service. And the quality of medical care can be improved through organizational and systematic supervisory management.
