新興病毒研究中心Laboratory for the Study of Newly Emerged Infectious Diseases   Emerging infectious diseases are infections that have recently appeared within a population or those whose incidence or geographic range is rapidly increasing or threatens to increase in the near future. Emerging infections can be caused by newly identified pathogens (e.g. SARS, AIDS) or strains that may have evolved from a known infection (e.g. influenza) or spread to a new population (e.g. West Nile virus), or be re-emerging infections, like drug-resistanttuberculosis. As an expert in the fields of coronavirus, hepatitis virus and influenza virus, Dr. Lai and RCEV plan to investigate several currently prevalent virus that threaten mankind in general and Taiwan specifically.   Initial research efforts will be on influenza virus, since influenza virus threatens the human population with epidemics and pandemics every year, and the current influenza vaccines and antiviral drugs are not ideal.     賴明昭
